I realized that I cannot keep track of all the excellent beers I've tasted, so I decided to start a journal. John likes beer.

My journal is xcheeseman

Some terms used in this blog:

DIPA means "Double India Pale Ale." This is an India Pale Ale whose alcohol content exceeds 7% by volume.

IPA means "India Pale Ale." The rare, true India Pale Ale is done in the old style of the brewers needing a preservative to ship beer long distances by sea choose to up their hop use. Most IPAs available today aren't meant as recreations of the style, but rather use it as a starting point.

Imperial Stout refers to "Double Stout" and "Imperial Stout." I choose to say "imperial" instead of the more acceptable "double" since it has roots in Russian Imperial Stouts... but really because it sounds cool.

Honest are the brews that use only the four true beer ingredients: hops, malt, water, and yeast. A beer that uses other ingredients is less honest.

ABV means "Alcohol By Volume." I don't use proof as a unit of measurement.

Mouthfeel is synonymous with "body." It's the viscosity with consideration for carbonation and alcohol dryness. As opposed to "body," I think "mouthfeel" better implies the sensation I'm talking about.

BA refers to Beer Advocate, specifically the Beer Advocate web site. This is the site that I get most of my beer infos. Go there, sign up, be enlightened.

The Cost Tag

I use tags to assist searching. The number applied to the cost tag is the price per ounce of liquid rounded to the nearest cent and multiplied by 100 (to remove decimals).

o btw:

Here's a link to the little Java program I wrote to calculate the price per ounce... and I realize it's a bit buggy.

Finally, enjoy some quotes

"You're not drunk enough if you can lie on the floor without holding on."
-Dean Martin

"I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day."
-Frank Sinatra

-City of Danzig edict, 11th Century

"Why do I drink? So that I can write poetry."
-Jim Morrison

"Do not cease to drink beer, to eat, to intoxicate thyself, to make love, and to celebrate the good days."
-Ancient Egyptian Credo

"Fill with mingled cream and amber,
I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chamber of my brain.
Quaintest thoughts, queerest fancies
Come to life and fade away.
What care I how time advances:
I am drinking ale today."
-Edgar Allen Poe

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer."
-Abraham Lincoln

"There can't be good living where there is not good drinking."
-Benjamin Franklin

"We are here to drink beer. We are here to kill war. We are here to laugh at the odds and live our lives so well that Death will tremble to take us."
-Charles Bukowski
